Manitoba Registered Music Teachers' Association

I have been a member of the Manitoba registered music teachers for about 35+ years. This association is important, as it sets standards for music teachers; is a network for connecting with colleagues in your area of expertise as well as other areas; arranges masterclasses for those in pre diploma group and provides a scholarship competition for junior intermediate senior and advanced students in piano, vocal, and instrumental categories. This competition requires the students to perform a program of music, where students can learn to develop confidence in their own abilities as well as to express music in front of others. They encourage talented students by having scholarships available for senior students to apply for based on their achievements as well as community services.

The Royal Conservatory of Music

The Royal Conservatory is an association which helps students organize their development and requires a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of music with regards to their instrument. There are examinations in practical performance, written theoretical and historical subjects as well as aural, sight, and ear training skills required by the students. The examinations are several times per year in major as well as some smaller centres. There are also awards for having the highest mark in the province for that year and some scholarships available as per the donors outline or request. There is a degree available after having achieved all of the levels and areas of study called the ARCT.

Canadian Music Competition

The Canadian Music Competition is a major Canadian competition based in Montreal. This competition is for the student who wants more challenges to an even higher level of achievement in a competition format. There are rounds of competition in the different provinces where students are selected to be national finalists and play together in one city at the beginning of the summer. Major prizes are awarded as well as opportunities to play with different orchestras and conductors. Another important benefit for the students is to make connections with other Canadian musicians of this caliber.
